This volume presents a complete report of excavations conducted by the Lower Don Expedition of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the eastern and western cemeteries of Tanais in the years 1981–1990, 1992 and 1995. As a result of rescue excavations carried out in areas due to be affected by future building, about 300 grave complexes in various states of preservation were discovered. The complexes date from the third century BC to the fifth century AD — a time of the most intensive ethnic contacts in this region.

The book includes a detailed description and classification of the burials, analysis of burial rites and a complete catalogue of artifacts found during the excavations. The report is supplemented with the results of anthropological analysis of the remains and a comparative study of groups of burial finds (pottery, jewelry, tools, etc.).
